Alberta woman threatened with jail time for riding horse around town, rides again
An Alberta woman says she was threatened with jail time for riding her horse down the streets of the town on High River, south of Calgary.
“I love my horses, yes,” said Shelby Opheim, who operates a rescue farm for horses. “My auntie was a barrel racer so I kind of got into it when I was younger.”
She rides her horse Charlie everywhere – even through the drive-thru for coffee. Opheim said this helps Charlie get comfortable in different environments.
About six months ago, Opheim and Charlie began getting into trouble with the law. Opheim said peace officers threatened legal action because she was riding her horse around town.
“They have pulled me over six times in the last six months. The last time was Tuesday. They told me that I was no longer allowed to ride in town. I couldn’t have h...

Alberta woman encounters three grizzly bears in her backyard
An Alberta woman says she was absolutely petrified when she came across three hungry grizzly bears in her backyard over the weekend.
Marjie Whitehead lives about 30 kilometres south of Whitecourt. She and her two dogs were just about to come into the house after watering the back garden when they saw the grizzlies.
Whitehead told Global News she fired "scare shots" to frighten the bears, but the attempt failed.
A spokesperson with Alberta Fish and Wildlife said they were called and set up traps in the general area. On Wednesday, three grizzlies were caught in the area, but Ina Lucila said they cannot confirm if they are the same bears Whitehead encountered.

Meet the Pioneering Western Women of Alberta
To some, being completely disconnected from the world seems intimidating. But to the horseback riders of Banff Trail Riders, this is their refuge, their value system, and simply put, their way of being.
Every year, Banff Trail Riders hosts a group of strong, independent cowgirls -- many of whom are alumni queens and princesses of the Calgary Stampede -- on a trip deep into Banff National Park’s backcountry, into areas far beyond where even the hardiest of hikers go and where cellphone networks are a distant memory. Where only a horse could take you. On these trips, the women unplug, commiserate with nature, and reconnect -- to the strength, independence and community values of the women of the west that came before them, and the values they now carry forth. And while Alberta’s rugged Rocky...

Alberta woman with asthma cleared after failure to use breathalyzer
Cheryl Kenworthy was charged with failing to take a breathalyzer test, her vehicle was impounded and her driver's licence was suspended after she was unable to breathe hard and long enough to complete the test. It took nearly two years for her administrative penalty to be overturned, and she worries what will happen to the next driver with respiratory issues who is caught in the same situation.

Video of woman crawling outside Alberta hospital sparks outrage, investigation
An incident captured on video that shows a woman crawling outside of Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, Alta. has sparked multiple investigations.
Pauline Johnston captured the video on Sept. 3, where she says she saw security guards take the woman off the property in a wheelchair and leave her at a nearby bus shelter.
"She started to crawl on her hands and knees back towards the hospital," Johnston said. "She appeared to have on some kind of leg braces or mobility aids on her legs, like she couldn't stand on her own. Then she was intercepted by hospital security."
According to Johnston, she called Lethbridge Police, who came and took the woman away.
She calls it just the latest instance where a person has been removed from hospital property and left without transportation.

An
Alberta woman says she was threatened with jail time for riding her horse down the streets of the town on High River, south of Calgary.
I couldn’t have horses here. I could be arrested and put in jail.”
But as Doug Vaessen reports, that’s when the mayor got involved.

Whitehead told Global News she fired "scare shots" to frighten the bears, but the attempt failed.

And while
Alberta’s rugged Rocky Mountain landscapes aren’t for the faint of heart when explored on your own, the women of Banff Trail Riders will have you feeling like you were born to do this your whole life.

Global's Erik Bay reports.
